Professional Experience                                                                                             

  • President, Space 4 Art, San Diego, CA                2007-Present

       Organized and designed community volunteer-built Space 4

       Art including 5 work/live units, 35 studios, 2 galleries, and

       office space. In 2011, added a large outdoor theater and

       classroom. In 2015-2017, was director of outreach program,

       building modular units for 7 affordable artist work/live units and

       Stage One of amphitheater and gallery for future S4A

       permanent home.

  • Robert Leathers, Artist, Architect, San Diego, CA     2000-2007

       Designed and supervised construction of Visions art gallery,

       developed 60 acres of land in Jamul, CA. Taught drawing and

       design, and was juried into Quilt National Twice and Visions 3

       times (2 top fiber-art exhibits in the world).

  • Architect,  Leathers & Assoc., Inc. Ithaca, NY           1976-2004

      Owner and president of an architectural firm specializing in 

       volunteer-built community projects. Beginning in 1970 and

       evolving over 34 years, 2,400 projects were completed in all

       50 states and 10 foreign countries. Leathers and Assoc.

       developed a system of community organization that was

       successfully applied to a wide range of projects including

       playgrounds, parks, science centers, science parks, teen

       centers, and zoos. All projects involved numerous local artists

       and schools in design and construction process.

  • Producer and Set Designer, Experimental Theater   1965-1975

       From 1965-1970 in Eugene, OR, and then from 1970-1975 in 

       Ithaca, NY, produced original theater productions, which 

       traveled from Seattle to San Francisco and then from Ohioto

       Massachusetts. Productions involved extensive

       collaborationsof film, sculpture, dance, theater, and music.

  • Project Architect                                                         1965-1975

       Worked with four architectural firms in Eugene then Ithaca.             Designed and administered construction on buildings ranging         in size from single-family houses to a $20 million new                       Southwest quadrant at the University of Oregon.
